 when i die, don't bury me out in a box in the cemetery

3.V.2004 :::: 12.31

metric, love is a place

i forgot to mention that on saturday we built a raised garden bed in the backyard. when i say "we did this," what i mean is that i did all the labor & bean acted as an overseer, since her spine prevents her from doing any labor. many, many & eventually overtired references made to peter gabriel ("digging in the dirt / to find the places that we hurt") throughout.

also i dug up enough fist-sized smooth rocks to make a cairn or maybe some other kind of monument. i said to bean, "i feel i am tuning in to how my family must have felt when they came over from iceland & came out to the minnesota frontier to start their farm." dig, remove rock, dig, remove rock, dig, remove rock, dig, marvel at size of mysterious root with no corresponding outsize plant nearby. dig some more.

now my legs are sore & my hands are a bit scraped up but at least we will get to eat some nice tomatoes. & we all remember, there's only two things that money can't buy. & that's true love & homegrown tomatoes.
