 change the world

13.VII.2003 :::: 18.50

i spent all day talking to activists & listening to activists & i would like to take this opportunity to clarify my general position toward activists which is this: shut up & change the world already.

i suppose that my general position comes from one of relative activist-y privilege, so to speak, since i wake up every day & go to a job that is, in my opinion, about as justice-y & grassroots & change-the-world as you can get. but still.

today we spent more than an hour writing one sentence of our revised mission statement. (we are revising everything. we have a pro-bono consultant & everything. can consultants be pro-bono? anyway, she is free.) it is not even a particularly elegant sentence.

here is my general position on mission statements. it is the same as my general position on all written things. to wit, ahem, they should be elegant, well-crafted, free of jargon, sonorous, & accessible. you should do the writing, & then you should shut up & move on already.

also i am just slightly curmudgeonly & definitely antisocial & on top of everything i dislike (to the point of trembling, actually trembling) talking with groups of people. i want to stop trembling & i want to shut up & i want to get up every morning & change the world.

in other news, tonight we are going with amanda to see legally blonde 2 (note to mischka: reese witherspoon!) & i am hoping that facile, mass-marketed entertainment will soothe my ruffled asocial mind.

also, the bug bites i got in georgia have for the most part healed. now they don't look like giant welts, but they look kind of like weird white pimples. so for anyone who sees me naked in the next couple of days, sorry about the weird white pimples covering my body.
