when i was in kentucky earlier this month i found a photograph my father had taken of me at christmas. in it i am hunched on the floor reading a book that somebody else got as a present that day. i dug a bit through my family's old albums & found that, just as i suspected, there are plenty of pictures in which i am hunched into a book & oblivious. to wit:

apparently at this point my father got tired of this pose. the next, final picture is twenty years later.
