what do you write when you are writing to someone you haven't seen or talked to in nine years?

dear josh,

i hope your travels have served you well.

yesterday on the bus this kid got on a few blocks before my stop & he was maybe, what, sixteen or so, & he looked so unnervingly like you that i suspected you might have little teenage-you spies rumbling around the midwest.

i have yet to be able to escape ohio, eight years on, and am living in columbus, working at (by which i mean "basically running but not getting paid enough to do it") a women's clinic here, and getting ready to go to, of all things, nursing school.

here it is unerringly flat and the only relief from the usual grey is the crazy amount of snow we've had this winter. it's nice. i need to remember to wear more sensible shoes outside.

right now i'm waiting for [bean] (my honey) to come home. we didn't do anything for VDay but tonight we have a midnight fondue date set for our living room. i bought two bottles of wine, from different countries even, with labels that complement each other.

i made three cds tonight. i am refraining from calling them a triptych. on the first disc is a live version of "kathy's song" & on the third is its secret b-side, "kathy with a k's song".

also, today in the car i compared a license plate i saw (tag# CU40UU) to various renowned paintings including six persimmons (mu qi), the arena chapel (giotto), any number of czanne still lifes. it's nice to know i've still got it & can get excited about that perfect 4 just off-center to balance out all the rounds of the rest of the tag.
