l____ handed in her two weeks' notice today. i hover between secret gladness, because she makes me uncomfortable, & a deep-down feeling that she is leaving because she doesn't like me. i know the first is silly & the second is patently unfounded.

l____ does things like call up our pharmaceutical representatives & ask them to send us samples just so that she can also get the free, say, teddy bears, that come with the little starter-boxes of birth control pills. then she calls them up & asks for more bears.

in the evening we like to eat pizza & look at books with plants in them. it is spring & every day on the way home from work bean stops at a nursery to look at their plants. she makes her report when she comes home & we look everything up in the books. last night we found a plant called Climbing Onion, which looks, seriously, like the plant that grew out of edward gorey's notebooks. the houseplant book called it "both rare and repulsive." i think bean is in love with it. i will not be surprised if she comes home tonight with a climbing onion in tow. i will have to warn her that the bulb is poisonous & to keep it away from our cats.
